“Elegance is achieved when all that is superfluous has been discarded and the human being discovers simplicity and concentration: the simpler and more sober the posture, the more beautiful it will be.”
Water dancer started out as a digital drawing by Bill. I loved it so much and I came in, later and added the dancer. We drew the original almost 2 years ago! You can see the digital drawing in the beginning of this works creation video, I hope you can see the JOY that was experienced in painting about 7 bajillion circles 🙂 For real, this was a pleasure to paint, so meditative and calm.
As Bill and I explore this idea of simplicity, we discover a rekindled love affair with line, color and shape. Layers of rich color laid, so carefully together, give the impression of gently moving water. This work is very large, 4 feet by 4 feet. It’s stunning up close but has an impressive impact at a viewing distance of 20-24 feet away. The eye stops seeing the circles and the magical movement allows the viewers imagination to enter the scene.
Our idea of “easy” or in another way of saying it, “don’t push for hard, simple IS hard enough!” we are learning simple is not so simple. Easy is hard to pull off and still look effortless and easy!
Permitting the flow to happen, the work becomes and unfolds, it is and was, a wonderful meditation. The circles felt so grounding and satisfying as they found their places. A sense of calm, confident, peaceful healing ensued. The healing greens and the calm blues against the red, orange and yellow sunset sky, seem to be dancing in tandem with the waters reflections and the dancer gently unfurling, bring the power of play into focus. To allow the natural voice of the work to be felt without hidden meanings or hard to understand associations. It allows the mind to engage in a spontaneous and peaceful exploration. It encourages smiles and generosity of spirit! It encourages joy and hope in the heart and mind. It is a healing work for a troubled time in reality.
We have been experiencing a new lesson:
Peace is not something that is created, rather it is our natural state once our internal war on the present moment falls away.
Thank you for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the new work! Our #PDXgaragegallery is closed for the month of February, we plan to re open to the public in the spring. We are always available for viewing by appointment, so please let us know if you’d like to stop by and take a look. We’d love to see you.
