God runs electromagnetics by wave theory on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday…

…and the Devil runs them by quantum theory on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.” ~William Bragg Sr.

Wednesday is the day in the studio that we sit with our “selves”. Its a day of reflection, gathering, assessment, critical thinking and of course the always present workflow. As we are in a re-building, re-framing, re-creating phase anyway because of our life circumstances…ya know, the whole find each other on opposite sides of the country, (with kids) relocate, get married, kick cancer’s ass and decide to combine our family, fortunes, talents and savvy into a new business /relationship/family unit… thing.

It’s been almost a year ago now that I arrived in Portland and walked into the arms of my new life. One where I didn’t die, didn’t have to prove myself lovable or worthy and was safely loved good and proper for the first time in my entire life.  On June 17, 2015 it will be officially a year. July 4, 2015 will be our first wedding anniversary. So, todays reflection…in the past 6 months we have (individually and combined) created over 50 new works. I arrived in Portland less than a year ago with 10 paintings that were favorites and a storage unit (left behind)  filled to the brim with hundreds of works; we are approaching the 100 mark of work in total and it’s feeling like there is a lot of work available.

I use my critical eye and really look at the body of work, splayed out on the walls and stuffed into corners of our studio, I can see, it’s really  just the beginning. It takes so much time to create a “body” of work. It’s months and years of sweating it out in the studio, loving, learning, hating, growing, destroying, re-birthing work that no one may ever see, because it was the growth point along the way not ever the destination. What actually makes it into the world and out of the studio is a sometimes grueling and solitary experience.  It’s the years of work that make the ONE painting out of 10 public worthy. It’s the years of living, learning and sweating that goes into the right mix of moment, materials and flow.

That’s what you buy when you buy art from a living artist. It is the years the dedication to craft and freedom and conformity.  It’s the common desire of all humans to resonate and be seen and heard; to be able to communicate your version of reality and understanding to everyone else. That is why there is art and artist and patrons and witnesses of reality and time. We take our job as artists very seriously. We work , hard, everyday. We do it when we are salty, we do it when we are sweet. We do it.  We make room for it because it’s more important than entertainment or acquiring.

We are living artists, burning, churning, producing. We do it for the love. We do it for the money. We do it because we have too, it’s our mission to be. We do it. We do it for you, too.  Just know that we do it with a critical eye to the future value of the work we create and the work as an investment for our patrons. We do this for the win-win.
